As Diana Leemon, Acting President, was unable to attend this meeting was chaired by Nigel Fechner.
The main business of the night was the proposed changes to the QMS Constitution. By making a few minor changes to the Constitution it is expected QMS will qualify for “Charity” status and so be eligible to receive tax deductible donations. The meeting voted unanimously to make the necessary amendments to the constitution and apply to ATO for recognition as a charity.
At the conclusion of general business Patrick Leonard reported on the April Field Trip to Linda Garrett Park and then continued with his photographic display of New Zealand fungi.

The Acting President and the Committee apologise to members for any inconvenience caused by the late cancellation of the meeting. Unfortunately, mid afternoon Nigel Fechner was taken ill and unable to conduct the microscopic workshop also it was too late to organise access to the building in Nigel’s absence.
Acting President, Diana Leemon was unable to attend, so Nigel Fechner chaired the meeting which was attended by 20 members. The forecast tropical storms on the Sunshine Coast resulted in the members from that region sending in their apologies as no one wanted to be on the road in the unpredictable weather.

Rachel Griffiths, Treasurer, advised that:
1. She had just finalised the purchase of the computer and digital projector which was financed by a grant that Michael Powell had organised. The meeting moved a vote of thanks to both Michael and Rachel for achieving this milestone.
2. QMS had now been given an ABN Number by the ATO. This must be listed on all QMS correspondence.
3. If members approve slight changes to the Constitution, QMS will become eligible to apply for Tax deductible Donation status. It is planned to notify members of the proposed Constitution changes in time for the motion to be voted on at the March meeting.

The meeting concluded with a workshop on “Describing Fungi” led by Ray & Noreen Baxter.

This meeting was very informal the only business being the report from the December Field trip which was given by James Hansen and Klaus Querengasser on behalf of the leader Jan McNicol who could not attend. While at the Redcliffe Regional Botanic Garden John Wrench had asked Don Perrin if QMS could assist him by writing to both Don and Redcliffe Council, highlighting the importance of the garden and the ecological need to retain these areas - complete with bush litter and debris – in the suburbs.
Accordingly a motion was put to the meeting that Jan McNicol and John Wrench draft letters for QMS to send the relevant authorities in support of the gardens.

This meeting was chaired by Diana Leemon who advised members that, due to his heavy work, study and family commitments Nigel Fechner had submitted his resignation as President and Committee member of QMS. Members were aware that the responsibilities of the President in establishing the Society and the QMS projects undertaken last year had added an enormous workload to Nigel’s already busy schedule. Diana thanked Nigel for his work in establishing QMS and expressed the appreciation of the Committee and members for the commitment, time and effort that Nigel had given to QMS. Nigel will continue to be the Scientific Adviser to the Committee and QMS.

In brief, the rest of the meeting covered:
The minutes of the previous meeting which had been circulated to members by email, a brief report on matters arising from the minutes was given.
James Hansen accepted the role of organising the supper roster for future meetings.
Klaus Querengasser and Jon Atkinson reported on the Boonah Field Trip and showed some photos.

Diana Leemon reported that she had obtained a grant from SEQ Catchments for the purchase of two “Motic” Microscopes, and a digital camera. Similar microscopes were loaned by Motic for the Fungimap Conference and proved to be extremely useful. Also six QMS members had attended the Motic demonstration of the capabilities of the equipment at DPI on 4 th July. These will be extremely helpful teaching tools for QMS – our thanks to Diana for obtaining this grant – preparing the grant application required a considerable amount of time.

The evening concluded with a thought provoking address by Nigel Fechner on “Conservation of Fungi”. It was particularly interesting to hear that Nigel had attended a two day conference on “Biodiversity” at which there was no mention of fungi until late on the last afternoon when he presented his paper. If people attending a biodiversity conference are so unaware of fungi no wonder the general public are even more so!!

In the absence of President, Nigel Fechner, our Secretary, Karalyn Herse presided over the very brief meeting. Issues discussed mainly revolved around the Field Trip Programme, and John Wrench reported on the success of the QMS Inaugural Field Trip. A formal report on the Field Trip was tabled and photographs taken by Rowena Long were available for members to view.

Jan McNicol advised that she has started a macrofungi information sharing site: http://groups.yahoo/group/mycena and invited everyone to check it out. This site should be able to work in conjunction with the planned QMS web site.

Before presenting his address to the meeting Dr Tony Young raised a few topics for discussion:
1. Good field trip sites that Tony and Nigel are very familiar with are the Bunya Mountains (people could camp on Tony’s block on Friday/Saturday night for a Saturday field trip; and Mt Barney in September would be interesting, though not for inexperienced walkers.
2. The first copy of Q-fungi was available for viewing – Karalyn Herse undertook to email copies to those who requested them, or mail CDs to those members who had slow internet connections. Tony emphasised that it was only for dissemination amongst members, and while he has copyright over 95% of the photos, for the remaining 5% copyright is held by people who are not in QMS, and that must be respected by all members. Members were requested to submit any proposed amendments and photos which they may hold to Tony.

Then followed information on the Field Trip programme and members were invited to nominate to attend the first two field trips and/or to lead one later in the year.

Business over everyone sat back to enjoy the photographic display presented by John Wrench. John has been photographing fungi for many years and while most of the photos were from Downfall Creek or Chermside some were from other areas.

The QMS/BATH Survey – the first survey period is scheduled for November. Volunteers will attend an Information/Induction morning 14 October and then meet with Nigel Fechner in November in preparation for the survey.
The Grants Committee is still investigating avenues for obtaining grants.

General Meeting followed by Sapphire McMullan-Fisher speaking on “Fungimap Targets In Queensland”.

Sapphire McMullan-Fisher gave a brief overview of the presentation by Dr Roger Kitching at the June meeting and then led members through a discussion of the proposed project. Many of the issues relating to QMS participation in the BATH project were discussed, after which those in attendance voted unanimously to accept Roger Kitching’s invitation and so the QMS/BATH project was borne.

Volunteers were called for to organise the project. Jennifer Singfield, Ray Baxter and Noreen Baxter volunteered and were elected to the QMS/BATH Organising Committee to manage the QMS/BATH project in consultation with Sapphire McMullan-Fisher, Nigel Fechner and Tony Young.

The funding issues were raised again so a Funding Committee was established, made up of Diana Leemon, Lin Fairlie, Julie Mackie and James Hansen.

Also there was discussion of the need for a QMS logo. A Geastrum was chosen as the focus for the logo. Sapphire McMullan–Fisher, Diana Leemon and Julie Mackie undertook to prepare possible logos for the next Committee meeting.

General Meeting

Issues discussed at the meeting were:
The circulation of a poster inviting members to assist in a Truffle survey project.

The costs involved in running workshops. QMS has to rely on the three Queensland Mycologists to conduct the quality educational programmes required, which places a considerable workload on them, just how much time they can commit to QMS on a voluntary basis was discussed. If funding for workshops cannot be obtained through grant applications, then workshops will need to be run on a cost recovery basis. This may mean that a full day workshop would cost $50 to $60 for members, with non members paying a minimum of $20 more than members. The committee will monitor the costs involved.

Copies of Fungi Down Under were available for members to purchase. In future, A Field Guide to the Fungi of Australia by AM Young and K Smith may also be available. It is hoped to sell books at a discount to members, but still make a small profit to go towards purchase or equipment, field guides and subsidising workshops (for example).

Tony Young has been in contact with Tom May to discuss the possibility of increasing the number of Fungimap species to include common Queensland species.

Nigel Fechner advised that Queensland has been approached to host the 2007 Fungimap conference. Discussion covered the following points:

• The number of participants is generally capped at about 100 – 120;
• Possible locations are being considered, in particular Lamington NP as there are conference facilities at Binna Burra and, if the drought ever breaks, potentially some fungi as well;
• Tony Young advised that he is on the Board of Directors for Binna Burra and did not wish to influence the decision making process;
• Nigel Fechner noted that he had proposed Lamington/Binna Burra as a possible location for the conference independent of Tony’s affiliations;
• Nigel Fechner is currently liaising with Fungimap representatives in Victoria to finalise details and the level of involvement required from the Qld Herbarium and QMS;
• It was decided that Nigel Fechner and Sapphire McMullan-Fisher would liaise with Fungimap until dates are firmed up and a Conference Committee is established.
